Kingston Municipal Council voted 5-2 Thursday to bring back metered parking along Wyoming Avenue next spring, ending a two-year pilot that made downtown parking free.

Supporters said the free pilot let commuters tie up spaces all day. Opponents worried meters would push shoppers to strip malls on Route 11.

The compromise

The final plan includes a free 30-minute option on each block, app-based payment, and a review after six months.

Revenue — estimated at $90,000 a year — is earmarked for sidewalk repairs and lighting.
